Since 1974 California Women Lawyers has represented the interest of more than 70,000 women in all facets of the legal representation. Today we join in the concerns raised by ABA President Hilarie Bass in a letter issued this week. We believe that separating families at the border based on a “zero tolerance” policy violates civil rights. We further believe that legal precedent makes clear that intentional government intrusion in the fundamental relationship between children and their parents is only permissible in very limited circumstances. We join with other powerful organizations like the United Nations Human Rights Office, the Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and take a position that this practice must stop.
