    President's Message

As we enter September, I find myself reflecting on the incredible work California Women Lawyers continues to do to advance women in the legal profession and in society. This year has reminded me that our strength as an organization is rooted not simply in the programs we offer, but in the relationships we build, the doors we open, and our willingness to advocate for one another.

September is also a season of transition. Summer gives way to fall, courts and workplaces return to their familiar rhythms, and many of us begin looking toward the final months of the year. It is a fitting time to consider where we have been, what we have accomplished, and most importantly, where we are going.

Throughout this year, CWL has remained committed to creating opportunities for connection, professional development, leadership, and advocacy. We have celebrated the accomplishments of women throughout California’s legal community, strengthened relationships with our affiliates, and continued the important work of ensuring that women have a meaningful voice at every level of our profession.

Next month, we will have a special opportunity to come together in person for one of CWL’s most anticipated traditions: theCalifornia Women Lawyers Annual Dinneron Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 6:00–8:30 p.m. at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse in San Diego.

I hope you will join us for an evening of celebration, inspiration, and connection as we recognize the extraordinary achievements of women throughout California’s legal community. The Annual Dinner is always more than an event on our calendar. It is a reminder of the power of community and what becomes possible when women support, encourage, mentor, sponsor, and advocate for one another.

As my second term as President moves toward its final months, I am especially grateful for the opportunity to gather with so many of you in San Diego. Serving this organization has reinforced something I have believed throughout my career: when women have a seat at the table, we must also make room for the women coming behind us.

There is still important work ahead. Women continue to pursue greater representation in leadership, on the bench, in equity partnerships, in public service, and throughout every sector of the legal profession. CWL will continue to be part of that work.

This September, I encourage each of us to reach back and bring another woman forward. Make the introduction. Recommend her for the opportunity. Encourage her to apply. Invite her into the room. Celebrate her accomplishments. Sometimes what changes the trajectory of a career is simply having someone say, “I see you, and I believe you belong here.”

Thank you for continuing to make CWL a powerful statewide community of women lawyers and allies. I look forward to seeing many of you on October 24 in San Diego as we celebrate together and continue building the future of women in law.

    In leadership and service,

Judge Patanisha E. Davis Pierson, Esq.

    President, California Women Lawyers

In Memorium: Drucilla “Dru” Stender Ramey

A brilliant advocate, beloved mentor, and unforgettable force for justice.

California Women Lawyers (CWL) alongside the broader legal community deeply mourns the passing of Drucilla “Dru” Stender Ramey. As one of CWL’s Founding Mothers, Dru was an architectural force for our organization, paving the way for countless women in the law. She was a longtime leader, champion, and friend to all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

Dru devoted her extraordinary career to expanding equality, access, and opportunity within the legal profession, the justice system, and society at large. A fierce civil rights advocate and charismatic leader, she brought brilliance, humor, unmistakable style, and an irrepressible spirit to everything she touched. Her profound impact can be seen not only in the institutions she transformed but also in the generations of lawyers and advocates she continually encouraged, challenged, and inspired.

Her enduring legacy extends across the legal landscape, including her deep dedication to the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice—which she affectionately called her "once and forever ABA home." Serving for many years as Special Counsel to the Council, Dru was a trusted counselor, a devoted colleague, and an endless source of wisdom. She gave her experience generously, constantly reminding us, through both her words and her exemplary life, of the courage, creativity, and persistence required to advance justice. She will be greatly missed, but her irrepressible spirit remains a guiding light for us all.

AAMTI XII: Cal Mock Trial’s 12th Annual Fall Invitational Tournament.

    November 7-8, 2026

Mock Trial is an academic competition where students are given the opportunity to simulate trial advocacy. We are seeking qualified legal professionals to act as judges for this event. Collegiate Mock Trial provides a fantastic opportunity for students to grow trial advocacy skills, and our tournaments would not be possible without our wonderful judges!

Every year, UC Berkeley invites the most competitive Mock Trial teams to participate in high-level Mock Trial competitions. We have competitors of all genders, races, religions, orientations, and immigration statuses participating in our tournaments. Women in trial advocacy face a unique set of challenges, and this is a reality many of our competitors are already too aware of. Cal Mock Trial wants to prioritize recruiting judges who can serve as examples of successful women in the legal field, and provide opportunities for connection to the next generation of woman-identifying advocates. We want judges that reflect our diverse competitors, we want judges who have had unique experiences, judges that have had to navigate the legal field and intersectionality, we want judges like the members of the California Women Lawyers.

The judging opportunities at AAMTI XII are:

    • Saturday, November 7 8:30 am to 1:00 pm

    • Saturday, November 7 1:00 pm to 5:45 pm

    • Sunday, November 8 8:00 am to 12:30 pm

    • Sunday, November 8 12:30 pm to 5:15 pm

To sign up as a judge for our 2026 tournament, please fill out this form listed on our website. It would mean the world to us if you could send out this opportunity to the members of your association or provide us with a list of emails we could use to send out information on this opportunity.

In addition to helping to create a more welcoming and meaningful environment for young prospective lawyers, AAMTI judges have been eligible for MCLE credit, including 1 hour of Recognition and Elimination of Bias for past tournaments. While we have been accepted in previous years, we cannot guarantee that we will be accepted this year, but we will continue to provide updates on the status of our MCLE credit! Judges are also welcome to stay for provided meals between rounds.
