ROSE BIRD MEMORIAL AWARD Nominations Due

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - 5:00pm

CWL is seeking nominations for the tenth annual Rose Bird Memorial Award, to be presented to an outstanding jurist at CWL’s 2010 Northern California Judicial Reception.

The deadline for nominations is January 20, 2010.

The award will go to a judge from Northern California, from Fresno County or any county north of Fresno County.

Chief Justice Rose Bird, the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, was also the first woman to serve on the California high court, the first woman to hold a California Cabinet position; and, in 1966, was the first woman law clerk on the Nevada Supreme Court.

Rose Bird’s unwavering devotion to doing what she believed was right, regardless of popular opinion and her efforts to improve the administration of justice were important landmarks in the history of the California Supreme court.  She was also known and loved for her unfailing kindness and compassion.  A long battle with breast cancer claimed her life at age 63.

The recipient of the rose Bird Award must manifest the qualities of the person for whom the award is named.  The honoree must be courageous and compassionate, exhibit brilliance and excellence, demonstrate a devotion to public service and inspire the women lawyers of California.

CWL presented the first Rose Bird Memorial Award to Associate Justice Joyce L. Kennard of the California Supreme Court in 2001.  Our 2009 honoree was Alameda County Superior Court Judge The Honorable Peggy Hora.

Please submit written nominations describing how the nominee meets the above criteria.  The nominations shall not exceed five (5) pages.  In addition, please submit the nominee’s resume and up to five (5) letters of support.

For your convenience, nominations can be sent via email to: info@cwl.org, fax – (916) 646-6469 or mailed to the CWL Executive Office at: 650 Howe Ave., Ste. 1050, Sacramento, CA  95825.
